Budgeting for Interior Design

One of the first questions that an experienced Interior Designer will ask you is What is Your Budget? It is also the question that very few homeowners are able to answer initially for a variety of reasons:

  • You just don’t know. You may know the rough scope of work, for instance, “we want a new kitchen”, or “we are thinking of remodeling the ground floor of our home”, but you have no idea of the costs involved and how to put a price tag on it.
  • You may not have refined the vision of their project, or fully decided what you want to do.
  • You may have never done a remodel or large project before, especially with the help of an outside expert.
  • You may be afraid of being ripped off, or being pushed into spending more money than you want to.

As we earn your trust through the design process, you will quickly see that the reason we ask about your budget early in the process is not to get you to spend more money; it’s to ensure that we can define a successful project that fulfills your vision of your new home look, and meets your definition of value for money.

How Much Should You Budget for Interior Design?

To help you answer this, let’s start by considering a few questions:

  • Longevity – How long do you expect to live in your current home? If you expect to remain in the same place for several years, you may wish to budget more for higher quality furnishings and finishes that will last longer.
  • Taste & Style – Are your tastes Simple or Elaborate? Modern or Plush? Prices vary as you might expect, with finer and more luxurious finishes costing more.
  • Maintenance – When considering materials and finishes, you should also consider the cost of upkeep. Plush furnishings and carpets need regular, professional cleaning to look their best. This can run up costs over time, and should be a consideration when choosing your style.
  • Use & Function – What will the room be used for, and how often? This will impact the durability of the furnishings and material selection. A family room will generally incur a lot more wear & tear than an occasionally used living room or guest room. Plan to spend more money in areas that get higher traffic – especially when children are involved.

I am still a bit shocked at how you can just do EVERYTHING! I thought this was all going to involve Brian and me having to run around to a lot of places, .. cabinets, countertops, lighting places, flooring places ... you are like one-stop shopping!
