Here in Oro Valley, temperatures are on the rise and humidity is declining. I talked last week about how plants can bring moisture into the air of your home for your health and comfort.

This week, I want to talk about something a little more decadent and exciting – indoor waterfalls.

Indoor Waterfalls for Your Arizona Home

Copper Wall Fountain

This beautiful wall-mounted fountain is from Kinetic Fountains. It is beautiful yet neutral enough to work well in any home.

Blue Indoor Waterfall

This waterfall from Harmonic Environments will add a fresh, cool feeling to your home.

There are so many reasons to start bringing plants into your home. From your physical health to your day-to-day mood, plants can keep your body and mind in great shape!

NASA has done a lot of research on the effects of houseplants in the home to determine whether or not they’d be beneficial on missions. Based on their findings, they recommend that we have 14-16 plants in our homes.

Why Should You Have Houseplants?

There are plenty of reasons to add some greenery to your home. Here are 5 of my favorite benefits!

1. Breathe Easy

Plants go through the process of photosynthesis, which will bring more oxygen into your home. At night, this process ceases and most plants emit carbon dioxide.

Some plants, such as orchids, gerbera daisies, and succulents, do the opposite. They will emit oxygen while you sleep. Try putting a few of these in your bedroom!

Some plants have air-purifying qualities that can remove toxins such as formaldehyde. Your health can be affected by the pollution that can enter your home. Plants will help cleanse the air and keep you healthy!

2. Ease Congestion, Colds, and Headaches

Some plants, such as eucalyptus, can alleviate congestion and other cold symptoms. Eucalyptus is an antiseptic, so it will help you avoid colds and, if you still catch one, it will diminish your symptoms.

Did you know that stuffy air sometimes causes headaches? The oxygen-rich air you will breathe once you have plants in your home will help to prevent them!

3. Humidify Your Home

In our dry Arizona climate, we do anything we can to humidify our homes. Plants are a beautiful and natural way to get more moisture in your air. Keep your skin soft and healthy by bringing plants into your home!

4. Boost Your Mood

Houseplants have several mood-boosting effects, in part because they lower anxiety and blood pressure.

Even the simple act of learning how to garden and care for a plant can lift your spirits. A study at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension showed that after a 4-week course in indoor gardening, those who were studied “felt healthier and happier than before it started.”

5. Beautiful Decorations

If your home needs that little extra something, some greenery can do the trick! After you select your new plant, you get to choose the pot. There are so many fun and unique colors and patterns to choose from!

Depending on the type of plant, you can use a simple terracotta pot all the way to glass globes that hang from your ceiling.

Those are just a few of the reasons you should start incorporating houseplants into your interior design plan. Happy plant hunting!

If you’ve read Our Story, you know that my interior design history starts from a young age. I desperately wanted to wear the fashions that I saw on tv but we didn’t have the money for that. So, I started creating my own mini-masterpieces.

Since then, I’ve worked at retail stores ranging from the bottom of the totem pole to the Senior Designer and Buyer at Saks!

I am so grateful that all that I’ve done has led me to interior design here in Oro Valley, Arizona.

You may know my history, but do you know the history of interior design in general? I found this fabulous visual that takes you from the very beginnings of cave drawings to contemporary design.

I think it’s just fascinating!

The design team here at Interior Expressions in Oro Valley, Arizona recently worked on a complete makeover of a home.

When Debbie and Jeff Burgess purchased the home where they will be spending their retirement, they were probably wondering “Where’s the disco music?”

Everywhere you turned you’d find mirrors, glass, cultured marble, and dated oak. Talk about a time warp!

Janice Williams, our Senior Interior Designer, was the miracle that they needed. She transformed it from a 1980’s town home to a 21st century cozy getaway.

A Total Transformation

The most amazing changes happened in the kitchen and master bathroom.

Kitchen Nightmare to Kitchen of Their Dreams

kitchen transformation before

Before Janice unleashed her creative talent on this kitchen, it was really not much to look at. It was simple, dated, and anything but exciting.

The new alder wood cabinets with a honey bronze finish combined with the contrasting Cambria quartz countertop give the kitchen a more open and airy feel.

We also put in new, stainless steel appliances and a glass, electric cooktop. The matching, contemporary exhaust hood brings the room together

We raised the backsplash in the cooktop area to extend all the way to the ceiling. You can see from the photos how much higher the ceilings look with this one simple trick!

Mastering the Master Bath

master bath remodel

A master bathroom should feel like a place of comfort and decadence. The mood should be one of warmth and relaxation. Before the remodel, their bathroom didn’t do any of that.

As you can see from the “After” photo, the biggest alteration that Janice made was to change the layout of the toilet and shower area. By simply moving a wall, Janice made the toilet area private, eliminated the tub, and greatly expanded the shower size.

In addition to that, there are new cabinets, counters, flooring, lighting, and plumbing fixtures. The spacious, tiled shower adds to the feeling of luxury that exudes from the room.

They Love It!

In their own words, this is their reaction to their brand new home!

“When we decided to update our future retirement home we searched for a Design and Remodel company that could help us achieve the finishes we were looking for. Janice and Interior Expressions helped guide us through the process and managed the entire job. We love the finished product and are enjoying our new home. (Plus she introduced us to Baggin’s).”

– Debbie and Jeff Burgess

If your home is in desperate need of an update, this transformation should be just the push you need to make it happen. No matter what decade your home is stuck in, we can help you. Just give us a call!

What Clients Are Saying

I hadn't worked with a designer before and didn't know what to expect. I was worried about being steamrolled into things I didn't want or like. That wasn't the case at all.

Kathy Davidson, retired

Oro Valley

I was afraid to contract this on my own. I needed trustworthy people to do the work.  So, I went to Interior Expressions.  They came through with flying colors.

Dorothy Baldwin

Oro Valley

I am still a bit shocked at how you can just do EVERYTHING! I thought this was all going to involve Brian and me having to run around to a lot of places, .. cabinets, countertops, lighting places, flooring places ... you are like one-stop shopping!

Pam Rhatigan

Tucson

The contractors that IE recommended to work with were great-very professional.and careful craftsmen. Their materials are very good quality and fit beautifully with our other furnishings.
